Creating a body of work
based on a "theme" is a familiar and enjoyable
experience for me as an artist. When show curator, K.N.
Goodrich, invited me to create encaustic paintings
responding to the exhibition title "Shadows and
Fog," I began as I usually do, by considering the
metaphoric connotations of the words.
As visual narratives, these paintings combine figurative and abstract elements to convey that shadows of our memories are ever present in our daily feelings, thoughts, and actions. The past defines our present. Fog speaks to me of the obscurity of self-knowing, despite our longing for certainty in life. The self-inflicted, obtuse confusion and opaqueness of our endless mind chatter, self-invented "stories" about our lives, and internal reckoning about the motivations of self and others, define the condition of being human. In rare, wonderful moments of self-understanding, realizations often appear suddenly and unexpectedly, fully defined, coming at us as if from "out of the fog." |
