This show is a continuation of the 2009 "Room To Breathe" series in which I began exploring ways to express the many and varied outdoor landscapes of Alaska via the medium of encaustics. Two of the paintings from the 2009 work are currently on display in the All Alaska Juried Exhibition, at the Anchorage Museum (through Oct 10th). One of those two paintings has received the honor of being purchased for inclusion in the museum's permanent collection. All of the paintings in this show were completed in the studio, however, some were informed by this summer's venture into plein air painting with encaustics. On the surface of it, not an easy venture, given that encaustic painting involves a palette heated to Fahrenheit 220. But with a butane camping stove, torch, and heavy frying pan, as you can see by the picture below, encaustic artists need not be excluded from experiencing the joys and frustrations of painting in the great Alaska outdoors!
