Sheary Clough Suiter is a mixed media artist whose unique imaginative style incorporates both figurative images and abstract designs with an emphasis on color and texture. She paints to express inner feelings and emotions, rather than to portray outer reality in an accurate, rational manner. Sheary was born and raised in Eugene, Oregon and attended both Oregon State University and University of Oregon. After becoming a Registered Dental Hygienist, Sheary headed up the Alcan Highway north to Alaska. Finding herself too restless to sustain the nine to five routine, she spent the next ten years in bush Alaska, devoting summers to managing a remote sport fishing lodge and air taxi service, and the long dark winters to becoming a writer. Following the success of two published novels and a stint as contributing editor for the University of Alaska’s award-winning literary journal, Alaska Quarterly Review, Sheary’s daughter, Lauren, was born. Saying good bye to the requisite solitude of the writer's life, Sheary re-prioritized her time to motherhood. However, unsettled without the creative outlet that writing once provided, Sheary began to study drawing and painting. A 34-year resident of Alaska, Sheary has now enjoyed the struggles and rewards of living the artist’s life for over fifteen years. She has received numerous awards recognizing her expertise in Encaustics, including a Rasmuson Foundation Individual Artist Project Award, and an Alaska State Council on the Arts Career Opportunity Grant. She was also named a Finalist out of 11,000 entries in The Artist's Magazine 24th Annual Art Competition. She works and teaches encaustic workshops out of her studio in Anchorage. In addition to privately commissioned work and participation in juried and invitational exhibitions throughout the Lower 48, Sheary’s art is represented in downtown Anchorage at Virtu Gallery, in south Anchorage at Panache, in Palmer at Half Moon Creek Gallery, and in Portland, Oregon at the Attic Gallery.
